QNAP TAS-168 – the domesticated NAS

Do backups between computers or clouds on the Internet, or make their "hranolky", or get ready – a long story, some aspects of which should be skipped. Originally planned to use QNAP TAS-168 as an editorial drive for backups of the website and similar tasks. But the final choice Droider never did, but there was good material for a review.

Before us is a version with one compartment for the hard drive, the maximum capacity which can be 6 TB. There is another option with two slots 12 TB of space, respectively.

I have to Say that the manufacturer is positioning the device as a home, that is for ordinary consumers. So that problems QNAP TAS-168 is selected from this message.

Let's Start with appearance and configuration. Inside the package showed cable cord for LAN-connections the remote control and the drive itself. The outer casing is made of glossy white plastic. The quality of materials is good, as Assembly. No backlash and no squeaks. By itself the plastic is quite thick and weighty.

Now take the disc and perform the operation to connect to the repository. This is done very simply. Cover drive spins only a cog. Do not have to have a screwdriver at hand, there is a convenient ring holder. Unscrew and take out the insides. Once it is clear where and what to do. Connects via a standard connector, as in any computer and mounted the drive on the sled. Looks hard, but in the box there is a plastic fastener that will provide additional structural stability. Probably in case if the pet or child decides to throw a buzzing box off the table. That actually sounds not loud, and quite intelligent. When watching the movie, cooler active cooling will not spoil the impression.

On the back there are 4 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, LAN port and reset button. On the front side: power button, USB 3.0, slot for SD cards and a scattering of flashing sensors. The store is running on a dual core processor ARM Cortex-A7 with a clock frequency of 1.1 GHz and 2GB DDR3 RAM.

After connection, launch, format the drive and setup took us about 30 minutes. Then came the standard Android settings menu and the start menu. Then you can synchronize your cloud storage and your personal Google account to get started.

The Most important difference between this QNAP NAS from other devices is the presence of the Green robot and the interaction with the application thereof, and more built-in programs to work with multimedia. That is, the playback of films and view photos running on the device, and then through the HDMI cable are translated to the screen. Handy thing, if the TV is not omnivores or even use a standard monitor. Android, though, and not the new one (version 4.4.4), but allows you to freely download any of the applications and adequately to work with them. But to play we would not recommend it. If only something simple, like Flappy Bird.

Moreover, the buyer provided a great variety of work with the files on the drive with the deleted device. For PC there is an app that allows you to join the personal store and download or play any files. By the way, you can start to watch a movie that will run on the drive, and you'll get streaming like in YouTube. A convenient feature when you have a good Internet connection. For Android and iOS also has apps. To sum up, all of them give the opportunity to work with the files or allow you to use your smartphone as bullets do.

The device there are perhaps 2 major flaws. First, work with the Internet. It is possible to connect only via LAN, no wifi, despite 2016. For Droider it was a real challenge, as the houses all have routers which distribute the Internet wirelessly. Searching in the bins, we found the Internet cable from the past, pulled to the nearest router. Secondly, the price. The device has attractive design, quality and features not available from competitors. But the question arises "why buy such a fancy TAS-drive?". Answer: to store files or work with them remotely. The cost of QNAP TAS-168 depends on the level of 26 000. For the same money you can buy storage with 12 TB on Board, but absolutely utilitarian functionality. However, the thing is extremely useful if you want to get to files from anywhere.
